Dress to Impress: Versus by M.I.A.

MIA Donatella VersaceM.I.A’s much anticipated album might not be out yet, as its release is continuously postponed, but fans of the Sri Lankan rapper will be pleased to shop her new capsule collection for Versus, Versace’s second line, which just hit stores.

The rumors about M.I.A designing for Versus started when she was previously spotted front row at the Maisons’ Fall 2013 Haute Couture show and wearing head-to-toe vintage Versace. She was later seen with Donatella Versace at her after-party, hosted at The Ritz in Paris.

The collection features five menswear and seven womenswear looks and marks Versus’ first non-designer collaboration. The controversial rapper’s collection is inspired by the counterfeiting of luxury brands. “The theme of counterfeits, of those that produce and sell them, has always been part of the culture of M.I.A.,” explained the singer to WWD, referring to herself in the third person. “When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle pattern. Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.”

The collection thus comprises a basic wardrobe for men and women, with t-shirts, oversized shirts, mini-dresses, leggings, and jeans, covered in bold, overall prints that picture variations of the Versace logo. Also incorporated are M.I.A’s initials and signature shout-outs.

“Sometimes I like the copies better and sometimes I like the original. I felt that there needed to be a bridge between both, or definitely a mix-up, so it’s really a collaboration between Versace and the bootlegs,” added the singer.
