CHILD’S PLAY: Jean Paul Gaultier Couture

gaultier-VogueAdding to its already existing children’s line, Jean Paul Gaultier will introduce a seasonal couture line for children, set to launch next Spring 2014. As one could probably expect, the first images show little girls dressed as princesses in voluminous tulle dresses in ivory and hot pink. The dresses in the campaign feature silk bodices and an accompanying bolero adorned with Swarovski crystals. Ninety pieces will be produced in each shade and will be priced at USD$1,200 each. In the image, the young models are styled in combat boots with one girl admiring her dress at in a large French baroque mirror, while the other looks at the camera with an air of disinterest. Quite French, as well, come to think of it.

So how many parents will spend as much on a dress for their daughters as they would on a handbag? We’re guessing that for those with a sufficient cash flow, enough for each season to sell out. After all, what mother or father with the means wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to offer their little princesses a limited edition couture dress from one of Paris’ finest designers? The only real question here is how long will it take for the other brands to follow suit?
