Over the years, photographer Terry Richardson has been acclaimed for his provocative take on fashion photography.
But not everyone sees it that way.
After several reports by online magazine Jezebel of harassment allegations made by models against Richardson, Change.org has started a petition against the photographer and urged brands and press to boycott him.
“More awareness needs to be brought to light that Terry Richardson is negatively influencing media with his supposed exploit and abuse of certain models, mainstream degrading pornographic imagery, and inappropriate and unprofessional behavior,” claimed Alice Louise, founder of the petition. “Allegations and complaints have been publicized from the likes of Coco Rocha, Jamie Peck, and Danish supermodel Rie Rasmussen against Richardson”, she added.
Anyone who has seen Richardson’s photos, frequently featuring a naked or nearly naked women, often simulating sexual acts, occasionally with a naked Richardson in the frame, too, will not be astonished that the man does not always exhibit wholly professional behavior in the workplace”, commented Hadley Freeman of The Guardian. “There are many things to criticize the fashion industry for, but the career of Richardson exemplifies one of its most shameful elements.”
Terry Richardson has made no comments on the allegations. Thus far, the petition has reached more than sixteen thousand supporters. According to Jezebel’s latest report, high-end gym chain Equinox has canceled its commissioned advertising campaign by Richardson.
