In early February, Vogue Italia Editor in Chief, Franca Sozzani, visited Dubai for the first time to launch the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience. This platform, to commence in October, will invite 180 high street and haute couture brands to showcase their talents, with some designing exclusive pieces especially for the event. Ahead of this launch, it would appear that Vogue still has a few surprises up its sleeve for the Middle East. Introducing a scouting manifesto, fashion designers and students are now invited to submit portfolios of eco-sustainable collections for possible inclusion in a photographic exhibition. For a product to be eco-sustainable, it must be manufactured locally; be of sturdy, simple design; and be produced with natural and recyclable materials that use as little packaging as possible. This is all in line with a continued push from the fashion industry to showcase a real care for the environment, for the health of the consumers, and care for all the social implications of the production process—for example, fair wages and worker conditions.
