On April 25th, the world turned its focus on Nepal when a massive earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale hit the country and forced 3.2 million people onto the streets. Italian luxury brand Bulgari has donated US $560,000 to Save the Children, a non-governmental organization which has been in Nepal since 1976, to aid in establishing on-ground relief efforts, such as providing tarpaulins and rope for temporary shelters; distributing baby kits including warm clothes, blankets, and soap to protect children from the cold nights; and access to basic hygiene.
Other proposed response activities include working with the local government to ensure that children are reunited with their families, that they have access to clean water and adequate sanitation, create child-friendly spaces where children can receive psycho-social support, treat malnourished children, and support mothers to make sure that their babies and young children get enough of the right food.
Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of the Bulgari Group, explained, “The earthquake in Nepal has had such devastating consequences—we need to do as much as we can and as quickly as we can. The children and their families are our first priority. Especially in the critical area of nutrition which is the focus of Milano 2015 Universal Exhibition where we already collaborate with Save the Children on this crucial theme.”
Bulgari has supported Save the Children since 2009 and has since donated US $35 million to the organization to help improve the lives of over 700,000 children in 25 countries around the world, with a specific focus on education and emergency relief. Efforts arrived following the earthquakes in Haiti (2010), Japan (2011), and China (2013). Bulgari has also provided support to Syrian children at the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan.
