Behind The Scenes: ‘The Return’ by Karl Lagerfeld

Howdy, partner! For Chanel’s upcoming Métiers d’Art 2013/14 collection, named Paris-Dallas, Karl Lagerfeld puts on his cowboy hat and flies to Texas in search of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel’s past.

This coming season, Lagerfeld will celebrate Coco Chanel’s special relationship with Dallas in a 30-minute feature film entitled The Return, starring Geraldine Chaplin, Rupert Everett, and his long-term muse, Lady Amanda Harlech, alongside other various models and French celebrities.

While the Paris-Dallas collection—which will put a focus on Chanel’s artisan heritage—will be presented on December 10th at the Dallas Fair Park, the city’s historical art déco venue, the film will be previewed shortly beforehand to select guests.

I will go to Dallas. You know why? First of all, I love Texas, I love Texans,” Karl Lagerfeld told WWD. “There’s another reason. When Chanel reopened [her Couture house], the French press was beyond nasty. The only press that understood it immediately was the American press, so I think it’s a nice thing to go there.”

Indeed, following the end of World War II, Chanel presented a new Couture collection in 1954. The collection was not well-received by the European public, but sold well in the US, especially in Texas, where luxury department store Neiman Marcus bought the entire collection. According to the brand’s archives, Coco Chanel even flew to Dallas in 1957 in order to receive an award by Neiman Marcus for her contribution to fashion.

Since 2002, Lagerfeld has developed a ‘Métiers d’Arts’ line for Chanel that is showcased every year in December. Recent Métiers d’Arts collections include Paris-Edinburgh in 2012, Paris-Bombay in 2011, and Paris-Byzance in 2010.
