One day you’re hanging out with your girlfriends taking selfies, the next day you’re the face of a big name fashion campaign—we’re not saying it’s that simple, but thanks to the digital world we live in today, it is certainly plausible. Fashion brands and modeling agencies are now turning to social media to scout fresh new faces. Dolce & Gabbana has an ongoing digital campaign #DGWomenLoveMakeup, which celebrates women of all ages, races, and nationalities. Every 15 days, an Instagram snap of a woman wearing Dolce & Gabbana makeup with the hashtag is chosen to be published on the brand’s social media channels.
For two consecutive seasons, Marc by Marc Jacobs invited fans of the brand to front the Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 campaigns. They were chosen through an Instagram and Facebook search of photos tagged with #castmemarc. Similarly, the renowned international modeling agency IMG Models has created a specific division for social media model scouting through a dedicated Instagram account, called We Love Your Genes. And it doesn’t just end with fashion—Rihanna took to Instagram’s explore page to find a member to add to her kidnapping girl gang in the #BBHMM video. The singer reached out to Sanam, the girl behind the alias @trustmedaddy, simply through a direct message. With everyone glued to their phones and engaging on social media, you never know who might be stalking your profile page or liking your pictures. You could be one hashtag away from kicking off a modeling career or staring in the next hit music video.
