It looks like Alexander Wang just set a new trend: crowdsourcing is the new black.
The American designer recently designed the “Wallie” charity bag in collaboration with and sponsored by Samsung Mobile. The lambskin backpack with an abstract all-over print includes leather corners and a drawstring closure.
The concept? Samsung distributes its new “Galaxy Note II” smartphone to Wang’s closest friends and co-workers, who doodled inspirational sketches and took various mobile pictures, which the designer then used to create the black and grey print for his new charity bag.
The recently appointed Balenciaga designer and new face of Woolmark seemingly doesn’t tire of design collaborations, with previous co-branded works including a limited edition collection with high street brand, Dockers, and a capsule collection for Mr. Porter. “My schedule gets a bit crazy now, a lot of multitasking, but I keep it all together,” explained Wang in a promotional clip for Samsung Mobile. “This collaboration is a great example of how technology and style can come together in an unexpected but really meaningful way.”
Wang previously expressed his passion for technology when he designed glow-in-the dark accessories for his current Spring/Summer 2014 collection. Profits from the USD$550 Wallie bag will support Art Start, a non-profit organization which funds artistic programs for at-risk children, teenagers, and young adults in New York.
