How Game of Thrones’ Khaleesi’s Platinum Hair Started an Uprising

Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones

Daenerys Targaryen “Khaleesi”, Game of Thrones

Whether she’s watching over her dragons, assembling armies, or conquering entire cities, Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen never fails to showcase an enviable, blond mane. Played by Emilia Clarke, and also known as Khaleesi, the mother of dragons showcased an impressive line up of flawlessly executed hairstyles by way of brushed out waves, intricately woven plaits, and raked back updos over the past five years. Dreamed up by head hair stylists Kevin Alexander and Candice Banks, Khaleesi’s platinum hair steals the spotlight via wigs, extensions, and accessories. In a nod to the Game of Thrones season six finale, we explore the ways in which Khaleesi’s platinum hair set one of summer’s biggest beauty trends in motion.

The bleached hairstyle inspired thousands of platinum dye jobs since the fantasy drama first premiered on Sky Atlantic in 2014. In fact, online retailer Amazon reported that sales of platinum hair dye rose by an astonishing 533% that year as women everywhere tried to emulate the warrior queen’s pale lengths. However, it’s not only viewers who are stocking up on peroxide, as platinum hair has been spotted on runway models, street style stars, and an array of A-listers, too. Kristen Stewart, Kim Kardashian West, Rooney Mara, and Emma Stone are only a handful of the celebrities who swapped their trademark brunette tresses for something lighter and brighter this year.

Much like Emilia Clarke’s resilient character, the shocking, platinum blond hue is fierce, empowering, and unapologetic. However, it’s important to note that the bold, scene-stealing look is not without upkeep. Girls who take the peroxide plunge require routine touch-ups to their roots and brows, and this can be costly (and damaging). But, if there’s any beauty lesson to take away from the Targaryen queen, it’s that a set of thick, dark arches pairs best with an arctic-colored mane.
