Kuwaiti designer Yousef Al Jasmi dresses celebrities like Dita Von Teese, Lady Gaga, and Jennifer Lopez in glamorous, diva-ready, red-carpet gowns, and it works. His Instagram fans (700k) adore his va-va-voomness and his clients in the front row had better follow Anna Wintour’s lead and break out the sunglasses, as the young designer seems set on blinding us with Swarovski crystals. His clientele certainly didn’t #wakeuplikethis—she is looking for the wow factor, which is exactly what she gets with Al Jasmi’s 100% crystalized gowns or beaded numbers with hundreds of fringes, a fit for both J-Lo and J-Lo wanabees alike. And if the crystals are not attention-grabbing enough, she can always resort to wearing a silhouette with sheer paneling to flaunt her atouts.
By all means, Al Jasmi delivers what he promises, but one thing he should take note of for the future is that his glamazon lives for the camera and Swarovskis don’t shine through the lens—a technicality which leaves undergarments very visible, especially under runway lights. But it would appear that the proud Kuwaiti has found his crystal-encrusted niche from Hollywood to Kuwait City.
