Zayan the Label

United Arab Emirates

Born in Beirut, Zayan Ghandour started her career in fashion with a limited edition T-shirt line. In 2004, she co-founded the award-winning multi-brand concept boutique Sauce, which now has nine outlets across the UAE. Ghandour’s experience as the creative director and head buyer of the boutiques helped her develop her own brand; Zayan the Label made its debut at Paris Fashion Week in 2011. Earlier this year, Ghandour opened the first standalone Zayan the Label boutique in Dubai.

Ghandour instills a feminine spirit in all of her collections by using vivid colors, billowing silhouettes, and inspiration from her twin daughters, as well as through butterflies, pastel colors, guipure lace, tutu skirts, and sometimes, with a clear message, “I want the fairy tale.” Her collections are stocked internationally in a number of leading boutiques, including Excelsior in Italy, People Boutique in France, and H-Lorenzo in the USA.

1. What does the Style.com/Arabia – DDFC Fashion Prize mean to you?

The prize would mean a great deal to me personally as well as to the entire Zayan the Label team which has been working on the brand and has been instrumental in developing and building it season after season.

2. What message are you trying to convey with your designs?

My message is that fashion is really about having fun and expressing yourself. Zayan the Label is about bringing out the best person you can be and having fun while doing so.

3. Why do you think that you are best-suited to win the Fashion Prize?

Zayan the Label has demonstrated a lot of potential for growth, going from a 30-piece collection to more than 100 pieces in a collection, while also adding and developing new categories. We’ve gone to great lengths to ensure that we have the correct infrastructure in place to be able to support this growth and pave the way for the brand to expand internationally.

4. Which designer most inspires you?

Alber Elbaz—I love his philosophy on design and life in general and how he loves to see women become so beautiful in his dresses.
