Mira Hayek

“I actually collect Japanese wooden dolls,” explained Lebanese designer Mira Hayek following her Fall 2016 presentation. “But this is inspired by origami dolls, which I recently came across,” she continued, motioning to the line-up of models styled in knee-high socks, heavy bangs, and swishy hair.

The Starch Foundation alumna offered an array of separates and dresses that women will be able to easily incorporate into their wardrobes for a playful, sophisticated update. There were several highlights: the “throw on and go” black silk dress moved like rippling water—it was also quite modest, yet very sexy. The pants with a vertical ridge from waist-to-hem was a cool 3D update of the satin strip on a tuxedo pant. The XL bell bottoms were cut to flatter any body shape, and its matching vest will serve as a chic addition to a working woman’s wardrobe.

And that’s what the underlying message of this collection is: Hayek’s Fall 2016 is splendidly versatile. One suspects that customers will have as much fun styling these neutral-palette clothes (and playing with the fold-over outerwear) as they did mixing and matching miniature pieces on their own dolls as kids. Unlike “all or nothing” eveningwear medleys, ready-to-wear pieces need to go the distance—and these clothes do just that.
