UAE-based Kage garnered a cult following in the region when it launched in 2009; at the time, its designs were punctuated with personality. Following a two-year hiatus from Fashion Forward, designer Basma Abu Ghazaleh returned to present her brand’s Fall 2016 collection, which consisted of daywear pieces and separates—jackets, tops, skirts, dresses, and shorts—that came across as out of touch with today’s softer silhouettes. Abu Ghazaleh explored a navy and brown plaid print that nods to ‘90s grunge, as well as gray tones, and (seemingly random) 3D tulip flower and cat prints. These prints were not particularly groundbreaking and neither were the cuts, though happily, the clothes were well-made. Moving forward, Abu Ghazaleh needs to re-evaluate how Kage can once again regain its luster and return with a hip statement.
