Soltana

Scanning the Soltana Fall 2016 couture show, one might correctly assume that its Tunisian designer, Fatma Ben Soltane, is obsessed with sequins. This offering was also replete with low-plunging V-necks, gold nugget embellishments, ribbons, suits, and shoulder pads—in other words, this was a show for the showgirl. And whether you’re Balquees or Taylor Swift gearing up for another stadium performance—or just a regular girl in Dubai in search of a statement look—there’s something here for you. Tutu dresses, leotard-like jumpsuits with tip-to-toe embellishments, and some docile (in comparison) velvet looks with hunky gold medallion shoulder patches placed in odd locales (not always on the shoulders) were featured alongside a floor-grazing dress (showgirls show their legs). A slew of tailored jackets were, for the most part, worn alone. One particular appeal about these showpiece jackets was their versatility; styled with sequin-embellished jeans, the jackets pointed to a chic high-low look. There were some missteps, including the black pant-skirt look with cut-out haut, which should have been edited out.

A quick query as to what Ben Soltane has produced in the past leads to a defunct website, and perhaps this is something of a new start. She showcased a strong Fall 2016 offering in a striking, jewel-toned palette and this critic is curious to see what she’ll do next—and if she boasts the skillset required to stick around.
