The “Mona Lisa” Vanishes and Yazbukey’s Got the Scoop

An American in Paris was the springboard for Yazbukey’s Spring 2015 extravaganza, a live tableau that tapped all the favorite tropes: the tourist, the artist, the bohemian, the prissy Parisian, the brusque waiter, a cat burglar in the body of a pinup—all with illustrations by Vincent Darré to help set the tone. The story hinged on an art heist as the foil for the lovably wacky, witty designer’s Spring line, which includes fewer little pieces and more handbags, eyewear with Linda Farrow, a trenchcoat made by Wanda Nylon, plus colorful silk scarves emblazoned with French newspaper headlines like “The Mona Lisa vanishes!”

With a nod to inspirations such as expat designer Patrick Kelly and Charles Aznavour’s “La Bohème,” the designer offered up handbags fashioned after Paris street signs and Gitanes. “Excuse my French!” exclaimed one. Another is emblazoned in old typeface with “Oui” on one side and “Non” on the other. “That’s for when you sit down with a new lover,” Bukey quipped. 

Yaz Bukey’s world is expanding fast: She’s just begun working on new pieces with Edgard Hamon, the nearly century-old costume jewelry maison behind Lanvin’s knockout baubles, for example. “I’m thinking stones, prints for clothes, shoes, perfumes, home-wear, everything,” she exclaimed. “I want to be the new Fornasetti!
