Versace’s Vets: The 3 Iconic Male Models Who Resurfaced for the Brand’s Spring 2016 Show

In the ’90s and early ’00s, Scott Barnhill was a familiar face on the runway and in advertising for brands like Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana, and, of course, Versace. A natural choice to open the Spring show, Barnhill starred in several of the brand’s campaigns, including a turn for Versace Jeans Couture in 2000 alongside his then-girlfriend, Gisele Bündchen. Editorially, Barnhill was every bit as popular, his angular look striking a chord with many of the era’s top photographers. Steven Meisel still looks to Barnhill when in need of a hunky guy to pose in the pages of Vogue Italia.

Iván de Pineda

Argentina takes its male models very seriously and, as a result, is home to many of the business’s best-known men. Iván de Pineda has been modeling since his teens and is a superstar back home, where he has transitioned into acting and hosting. In fashion, De Pineda made his mark in campaigns for Chanel, Gucci, and Gianni-era Versace. Appearing on the Versace runway again after a decade-long absence even prompted a gleeful Instagram from Donatella herself.

Lars Burmeister

With just over a decade in the business, Burmeister is the youngest of the bunch, but his washboard abs and classical handsomeness hark back to another era. Walking for Versace since 2005, Burmeister has become a well-known presence in the modeling business—particularly when the job calls for a flawless physique. For Spring, Versace transformed him into a bandanna-wearing, leather-jacket-clad bad boy, wildly different from the cleaned-up sexiness he usually offers at its shows.

If the chiseled men who strutted down Versace’s menswear runway this week seemed worlds away from the androgynously pretty boys who’ve been dominating the menswear collections, there is a good reason for that. For her Spring 2016 show, Donatella Versace looked into the archives and an array of male models from the ’90s and early ’00s for inspiration. Peppered in between heavily hyped newcomers like Jordan Barrett and Lucky Blue Smith were several of the designer’s tried-and-true favorites, some of whom have a history with Versace dating back to the days of Gianni himself.
