He is responsible for launching street style culture and the avalanche of street style blogs… His name is Scott Schuman—also known as The Sartorialist. After the triumph of his first book, Schuman has penned a second, titled Closer. This week, Style.com Arabia spoke with Schuman on everything from the Middle East, to his pet peeves, and why he always looks so serious…
What are you up to these days?
More and more book signings in interesting cities.
Is the Middle East in the cards?
Why not? Never been.
Scott or The Sartorialist?
Uh, Scott.
What makes you pull out your camera and shoot?
I’m just reacting to what I’m seeing… I’m drawn to posture, light, and the clothes—a combination of things.
What are your pet peeves during fashion week?
I try to be very easy going and relaxed during fashion week, because there are always enough situations to make you go crazy… I try to stay calm, and get on with my job.
You always seem so serious… why is that?
One, I’m very serious about my job. Two, I wear my glasses when I’m working on the computer but I don’t like using them when I’m shooting because it’s distracting so I usually look serious as I’m grimacing since I can’t see.
New York or Paris?
New York, definitely…
We loved your first book, why should we get a copy of your second?
There is more variety, more cities, different compositions, and more portraits.
Do you miss the time when you were the only street style photographer?
Every season, there is always someone new—a new third string editor, a new magazine, a new student trying to get in to a show, and a new PR person. There is always a new person. It just matters that I’m doing my job well.
We watched the Vice Video. Do you often get questions from people asking you to make them famous?
No, not really. I knew he was acting and I didn’t take him too seriously. He should have rehearsed his act a bit longer and maybe it would have worked, but it didn’t.
Do you get women with crazy outfits trying to capture your attention?
Like I said I don’t wear my glasses when I’m shooting so maybe they do and I just don’t see it.
