Oscars 2015: Best and Worst Dressed

While cinefiles may obsess about which actor will take home Oscar, fashion forecasters do the same when it comes to the Academy red carpet. Today, at the Style.com/Arabia office, while the editors debated the numerous looks, more than a few proved to be polarizing; cue Marion Cotillard’s Dior dress and Scarlett Johansson’s Atelier Versace gown. But amidst our various perspectives (and they are indeed varied), one thing we all agree on is this: Elie Saab remains the undisputed King of the Red Carpet. All hail the Lebanese couturier.

BEST DRESSED Keira Knightley, Valentino Ethereal Keira shines in this dress and it’s not only due to her pregnancy glow. Margot Robbie, Saint Laurent Chic, chic, chic: the haircut, the retro feel of the cascading chiffon, and the tasseled necklace. A+ Jennifer Lopez, Elie Saab Haute Couture This dress matches the color of her skin perfectly and the crystals, the volume, the accessories, and the ponytail are all on point. I am usually not a JLo fan, but she nailed it this time.

WORST DRESSED Julianne Moore, Chanel Haute Couture She used to invariably come at the top of my list, so you can imagine my disappointment. You knew you were going to get the Oscar Julianne, so why wear this underwhelming dress? I wish it would have fit better, but who can argue with King Karl? Chrissy Teigen, Zuhair Murad The hair and makeup remind me of Khloe Kardashian's go-to beauty look, which looks great on the reality TV star but not so much on a fresh-faced model. Meanwhile, the dress is flirting on the cliché side of red carpet. With this body and this face there were many better options. Rosamund Pike, Givenchy Haute Couture This will be an unpopular opinion but this dress bored me.

BEST DRESSED Jennifer Lopez, Elie Saab Haute Couture Why was JLo named as the world’s sexiest woman again? Oh yeah, that’s why. Julianne Moore, Chanel Haute Couture Her romantic take on life is so alluring. I want Mo(o)re. Emma Stone, Elie Saab Haute Couture Her pale green dress and red hair would not look out of place in a real life, “Little Mermaid Goes Couture” wardrobe.

BEST DRESSED Emma Stone, Elie Saab Haute Couture This chartreuse-colored gown looks absolutely stunning against Stone's fair skin and auburn locks. Rosamund Pike, Givenchy Haute Couture Ruby red is divine on Pike and the scalloped neckline, which keeps her cleavage covered, is both unique and demurely feminine. Georgina Chapman, Marchesa Queen of the night.

WORST DRESSED Marion Cotillard, Christian Dior Haute Couture Never in my life would I imagine using "frumpy" to describe a Dior couture gown but that's what this is. Scarlett Johansson, Atelier Versace This bejeweled neckline is too much. It looks like she put on a saloon costume as opposed to a red carpet dress. Felicity Jones, Alexander McQueen The volume of this dress beckons for it to be noticed and yet the blah slate color means that she will ultimately fade into the background.

BEST DRESSED Rosamund Pike, Givenchy Haute Couture After several failed red carpet attempts of late, she finally nailed it (I would have added a red lipstick for top marks). Jennifer Lopez, Elie Saab Haute Couture A dreamy pearl embellished blush pink cloud of tulle. Gwyneth Paltrow, Ralph & Russo The clean silhouette serves to highlight her slender frame. Pairing the pink with oversized ruby baubles and straight locks is just so dainty.

WORST DRESSED Nicole Kidman, Louis Vuitton This effort screams, “Beauty pageant gone bad.” Scarlett Johansson, Atelier Versace Did anyone else notice that both Scarlet Johansson and Felicity Jones' heads were no longer attached to their bodies?

BEST DRESSED Emma Stone, Elie Saab Haute Couture This awards season, Emma Stone can do no wrong. Period. Rosamund Pike, Givenchy Haute Couture Siren red indeed; the lace and the demure silhouette make this dress a firecracker on the red carpet. Cate Blanchett, Maison Margiela Sometimes,​ all you need is a pop of color and a fabulous piece of jewelry to breathe life into a black dress.

WORST DRESSED Scarlett Johansson, Atelier Versace She looks like she’s auditioning for the female version of the Green Lantern—​someone should let her know that there isn't one (thankfully).​ Lady Gaga, Azzedine Alaïa Unless she was in the middle of washing the dishes when her ride to the Oscars arrived, there is no excuse for wearing those gloves (or even the dress, for that matter). Nicole Kidman, Louis Vuitton One would think that Nicole Kidman had her red carpet appearance down pat by now; apparently not. ​

BEST DRESSED Emma Stone, Elie Saab Haute Couture In this head-to-toe acid green gown, the raven-haired maven proves that she can do no wrong on the red carpet. Scarlett Johansson, Atelier Versace The actress stood out like a gem in a sea of blasé beige. The flattering, emerald green, statuesque dress demands attention. Marion Cotillard, Christian Dior Haute Couture Finally, somebody shook things up on the red carpet. The "baby got back" strap on this Dior number is everything.

WORST DRESSED Solange Knowles, Christian Siriano Trying to come up for air, Solange Knowles looks like she's drowning on the red carpet. The flowy cherry-tomato red polo neck number is not a favorite on my list. Lady Gaga, Azzedine Alaïa Lady Gaga was close to a hit—if only she had remembered to leave her dishwashing gloves at home. Rita Ora, Marchesa Marine ball meets beauty pageant. Rita Ora's fishtail train reminds us that bigger and bolder isn't always better.

BEST DRESSED Karolina Kurkova, Marchesa The color is beautiful and the lovely ruffle detail at the back is perfect for a red carpet look. Marion Cotillard, Christian Dior Haute Couture Simply stunning, she looks like an old Hollywood star. The front of the dress looks quit simple and elegant but the back, which I love, had two appendages that twist. She also styled her hair perfectly for this dress. Scarlet Johansson, Atelier Versace The green color compliments her skin tone and the shape of the dress is prefect for her body. Loving the matching accessory.

WORST DRESSED Nicole Kidman, Louis Vuitton This disappointing dress with red belt looks like a disco ball. I don’t know what she, nor her stylist, were thinking. Sequined dresses are so out this year. Rita Ora, Marchesa The gold embroidery work on this black dress made for something my grandmother would wear to a wedding. Too much fabric. Anna Faris, Zuhair Murad She looked like she was going to the prom. Too much “bling, bling” on this dress made her skin look pale. It also looks like she bought an expensive belt and thought that she therefore had to wear it.

BEST DRESSED Georgina Chapman, Marchesa Regal allure. A queen. This is how you should dress for the Oscars. Keira Knightley, Valentino Couture It's not easy to look good on the red carpet while pregnant but like the poem on her dress, she looks flawless. Emma Stone, Elie Saab Haute Couture Fresh and modern, but with the right amount of sass and playfulness. Amidst a sea of white and black gowns, I love this zest of color.

WORST DRESSED Lady Gaga, Azzedine Alaïa It pains me because it is custom Alaïa, but I can't get past the tacky tattoos and side cleavage. Solange Knowles, Christian Siriano It's not so much that this look is not Oscar-appropriate, but more importantly, I expected so much more from Solange. Scarlett Johansson, Atelier Versace She manages to make the gown look cheap and uninspiring.

BEST DRESSED Behati Prinslo, Armani Privé This two-piece creates super flattering hourglass curves, while the red lips and slicked-back low bun feels very sultry tango dancer on the streets of Buenos Aires. But it's the spun-sugar texture of that encrusted gown that really caught my eye. Emma Stone, Elie Saab Haute Couture The sequined detail on this this lime green Elie Saab gown is simply amazing. Sienna Miller, Oscar de la Renta The square-cut neckline of this dress is extremely refreshing and I love the added velvet bows. The sheer lace fishtail is simply stunning.

WORST DRESSED Lupita Nyong’o, Calvin Klein Lupita is usually a red carpet favorite but I’m not sure anyone could pull off this pearl-overload Calvin Klein gown. The huge strands of pearls around her shoulders look like they're wrestling each other, while the keyhole cutout seems like a messy little afterthought. Marion Cotillard, Christian Dior Haute Couture This terrycloth, turtle-back sack of a dress is officially an abomination. From the front, Marion could be a contender for best dressed, but from behind, it’s a nightmare. Lady Gaga, Azzedine Alaïa You’ve got to give it to Lady Gaga, she's not afraid of a wacky choice but those gloves are just too much.
