Haute Couture #FashionHistory: Yves Saint Laurent’s Final Couture Show Spring 2002

Paris Fashion Week Haute Couture is known to be a high-drama affair filled with theatrical presentations, elaborate sets, extravagant makeup and notably, remarkable designs combined with pristine craftsmanship. Ahead of Haute Couture Spring 2016, Nouriah Al Shatti will revisit the most enchanting and unforgettable moments in Haute Couture fashion history.

Renowned couturier Yves Saint Laurent staged his final show during the Couture Spring 2002 season. The designer of Algerian descent showcased his grand finale at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and featured a vast selection of his past masterpieces created throughout his 40-year career. Opening the show was the original pea coat paired with white pants from his 1964 collection, followed by styles popularized by the designer such as the safari jackets, the Mondrian dresses, his famous sheer black gowns, and his iconic women’s tuxedo called Le Smoking. Among a kaleidoscope of looks were a beaded matador number, raffia and fringe silhouettes, and a knitted cocoon bridal dress. A cast of famous faces strode down the catwalk to bid farewell to the celebrated designer including supermodels Claudia Schiffer, Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, and Jerry Hall, who made a dramatic exit in a white silk ostrich feather-trimmed gown. For his final bow, Yves Saint Laurent walked arm-in-arm with his muses Laeticia Casta and Catherine Deneuve.
