How does one follow up on an extra-buzzy ad campaign starring Gisele Bündchen (with cropped hair, no less)? Well, it’s certainly not easy to top that. But if you’re Alexander Wang, creative director of Balenciaga, you cast another iconic supermodel (Sasha Pivovarova) and put her in some of the Spring collection’s biggest hits. Those skintight net dresses with jet beading especially come to mind here.

In keeping with his ongoing Balenciaga ad campaign themes of transformation (namely Bündchen and, before her, Daria Werbowy), Wang wanted to show a different side of Pivovarova. “There’s a mysterious quality about Sasha Pivovarova that I wanted to amplify in subtle poses and gestures: She can convey multiple emotions in a single glance,” Wang tells Style.com. He did that by focusing on the lighting. “I wanted to play with perspective and scale to naturally showcase the embroideries of the clothes, but in a single room, a very pure environment where a clear, glowing light becomes a central character.” Here, an exclusive first look at the campaign shot by Steven Klein and styled by Panos Yiapanis.
