The Islamic world is a complex one to understand and a major subject in contemporary art. Banu Cennetoğlu, a Turkish artist living in Istanbul, investigates this world via photography, installations, and printed media. Her research explores the question of documentation and perception, with an obsessive compilation using the medium of print. In 2006, she founded BAS, a space that focuses on artists’ books and other printed works in Istanbul. Presented this year at Art Dubai at the Rodeo Gallery is her piece titled 02.11.2011.
A collection of daily Arabic newspapers from 20 Arabic speaking countries, ten volumes, all hardcover bound, were printed on the date 02.11.2011. Not only is this piece sociologically and politically interesting, but it will also make a statement in anyone’s home, not to mention, provide a great read.
