In collaboration with the Cologne-based art gallery, Brigitte Schenk, the Sharjah Museums Department is presenting a collection of 350 fashion illustrations and photographs from the private collection of German art collector, Martin Fervers, live until November 30th.
Curated by German gallerist and former consultant to Joseph Beuys, Brigitte Schenk, The Lure of Beauty exhibition documents 100 years of fashion illustrations and photography from the early 1920s to the late 90s.
The exhibition includes rare, archived works, such as drawings and gouaches depicting gowns, coats, and hats from the House of Jeanne Lanvin in the late 1920s next to pencil-sketches of Christian Dior and Pierre Balmain from the 1930s to the late 1960s. A further section of the exhibition features a retrospective on 20th century fashion media, including the French publication Gazette du Bon Ton, founded in 1912 as well as early editions of American, British, and French Vogue.
Numerous drawings by renowned illustrators such as René Bouché are featured in the exhibition, next to vintage works of famed photographers, including Richard Avedon and David Croland. A special nod is made to the ‘90s supermodel era, with an artistic reportage of catwalk shots and backstage glimpses.
“We hope this exhibition will bring a new audience of people that are interested in fashion, but also in photography as art,” added Ataya. “The Lure of Beauty features a unique collection of fashion illustrations and photographs that demonstrate the dynamic role fashion plays in illustrating the culture of human communities.”
