Historically, the MTV Video Music Awards red carpet attracts risqué outfits. In the past, celebrities made an entrance in sheer silhouettes, sexy playsuits, and a certain meat dress. However, last night’s style choices diverted from previous years, and A-listers opted for understated ensembles (in comparison). Read on to discover the trends that dominated last night’s 2016 MTV VMAs.

JAZZY JUMPSUITS

Celebrities dropped dresses in favor of jumpsuits. Hailey Baldwin arrived in a sheer, embellished number that featured beaded leaf motifs by Lebanese designer Georges Chakra. Singer Halsey stood out in a white, body-hugging, embellished halter neck suit by Kuwaiti designer Yousef Al-Jasmi. Meanwhile, singer Tinashe donned a red, loose-fit, silk design.

SHIRTLESS SUITS

There was no shortage of well-dressed gents on the red carpet at the 2016 MTV VMAs. They took a laidback, low-key approach by donning shirtless suits. Case in point: Desiigner and Ty Dolla Sign. Singer Cassie also took on the trend, and donned a Balmain blazer (without top) with gold Gucci trousers.

COLD SHOULDER

Taylor Hill and Britney Spears opted for asymmetric neckline dresses that accentuated their exposed shoulders. Singer Tove Lo donned a minimal, blazer-inspired dress complete with a shoulder exposing, drop neckline by Dion Lee.

BACK TO BLACK

A number of A-listers took the classic route and attended the VMAs in all-black. Rita Ora upped the ante and paired a sheer Marc Jacobs gown with a leather biker jacket. Singer Zara Larsson showed off her limbs in a structured, off-the-shoulder frock; while Ariana Grande made a case for high-waisted trousers. The singer paired them with a wispy, lace crop top by Alexander Wang.
