Hair Piercings: How to Create Fall’s Hottest Hair Trend

Hair jewelry was first spotted at Alexander McQueen Fall 2016 ready-to-wear when models sported messy updos decorated with repurposed trinkets. It was again seen at the Valentino Haute Couture Fall 2016 show, with models wearing low ponytails gripped with golden rings. The add-ons have since gained momentum, with the freshly coined “hair piercings” making the biggest mark on celebrities looking to add edge to their look.”

Style.com/Arabia discussed the trend with Christopher Appleton, the LA-based go-to stylist for Rita Ora, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Lea Michele, and Kim Kardashian West. “Hair hoops are a great way to add attitude to your hair,” he emphasized. Referring to the silver pierced cornrows he styled on Kardashian West, Appleton remarked, “I look at hair like art.”

The hairstylist was also responsible for the statement updo worn by Pretty Little LiarsShay Mitchell at the 2016 Teen Choice Awards; while Ariana Grande turned to Appleton to sweep her long, caramel lengths into a swingy ponytail. He decorated her signature style with a row of small, metal hoops that ran neatly down her center part.

To pierce your hair at home, twist your strands into a braid—try a French, fishtail, or Dutch braid— before weaving small, metal hoops into it. Spray your braid with the Sachajuan Hairspray (US $31; AED/SAR 114) to keep the hairstyle in place. Appleton’s tip: “Experiment with different sized hoops and colors to make strands stand out.”
