This Year’s King of the Cannes Red Carpet Is…

The closing ceremony that took place last night on the French Riviera marked the end of this year’s Cannes Film Festival. This year’s edition saw the Palme d’Or—the festival’s highest honor—awarded to I, Daniel Blake, a movie by British filmmaker, Ken Loach. However, eyes weren’t only on the rotation of movie premieres. The annual festival once again delivered an incredible number of couture sightings on the red carpet. Designers went head-to-head vying to dress A-listers and fashion icons, and our Middle Eastern talents did not disappoint. Cinema sirens topping the best dressed lists donned dresses by Georges Hobieka and Georges Chakra. Meanwhile, up-and-coming talents such as Rami Kadi and Mohammed Ashi also dressed a number of prominent names. Undoubtedly, Zuhair Murad had a solid presence at Cannes. Over thirty grand Zuhair Murad gowns and couture silhouettes were spotted on the red carpet by the Lebanese designer on the likes of Alessandra Ambrosio, Elle Fanning, Izabel Goulart, and Chanel Iman.

However, the crown for King of the Red Carpet at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival goes to Lebanese designer Elie Saab. The renowned couturier made a fashionable splash by delivering a cavalcade of couture creations that were worn by some of the biggest names in fashion and film. Highlights include model Kendall Jenner attending the Chopard party in a long-sleeved, feather embellished, asymmetrical sheer gown. Freida Pinto made a stunning appearance in a short, long-sleeved, 3D floral frock, and Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan shined at the premiere of Le Bon Gros Géant in a blush, floor-sweeping, couture gown that featured hand-beaded embroidery.

The climax of the film festival was marked by the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS benefit, which saw Milla Jovovich arrive to the glittering gala in a metallic, paneled, sequin-laden gown and arm-in-arm with Elie Saab himself. Also making an appearance was the designer’s son Elie Saab Jr. who attended the high-profile party alongside Afef Jnifen and Toni Garrn, who were both dressed in Elie Saab ensembles.

The Lebanese designer not only dominated the red carpet, but he delivered a 360-degree experience of the event with a little help from the brand’s showroom suite at the iconic Hotel Martinez. An array of haute couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories were on display alongside the brand’s new eyewear line that was spotted on the likes of Julia Roberts, Naomi Watts, and Jessica Chastain while they strolled the Croisette. Meanwhile the brand’s customized social media hashtag #WhatHappenesinCannes and e-magazine The Light of Now streamed live updates and behind-the-scenes footage during the film extravaganza. In the slides ahead, see all the Elie Saab dresses the ruled this year’s Cannes film Festival.
