Dermapen Skin Rejuvenation—Collagen Revival

Needles. It is a word that ignites cold fear in grown men’s hearts. Now imagine eleven tiny needles simultaneously piercing your face. In layman’s terms, this describes the treatment I was about to undergo. Was I excited? Hardly. Enthusiastic? Not really. But in my ongoing quest for the latest beauty method, I was prepared to boldly go where only Beauty Editors and obsessive compulsive beauty fanatics have gone before. And so, I ventured out to the Biolite Clinic in Dubai, Healthcare City, to try the Dermapen—the latest micro-needling device to hit the skin rejuvenation market.

My assigned aesthetician, Richie, talked me through the ups and downs of the treatment to calm my visibly shaky nerves. She explained that if I had previously tried the manual Dermaroller, which I had, then the Dermapen would be a breeze. The needles puncture the epidermis creating “micro-injuries” which encourage and stimulate the skin’s innate ability to re-grow and repair itself through collagen induction.

She began the treatment by thoroughly cleansing my skin and then proceeded to exfoliate with a deliciously fragrant pineapple scrub to remove the dead skin cells and prepare the epidermis. She then proceeded to apply a layer of anesthetic cream to numb the skin and make the needling more comfortable. Fifteen minutes later and we were ready to go; Richie began the treatment along the jawline and fleshy cheek areas, which she assured would be the least painful, and gradually worked her way to the boney areas such as the forehead and nose. Admittedly, the sensation was not as bad as I had anticipated and I only felt linear pressure and a minor pricking which was not entirely unpleasant. Until of course, Richie reached the edges of my face upwards towards the hairline where the anesthetic had not absorbed properly and that is when I fully appreciated what a blessing the cream was.

Due to the direct channels, which are created via the micro-wounding, all nutrients directly reach the lower layers of the dermis so a combination of serums rich in vitamins and hyaluronic acid were applied to my face and neck to energize the healing process.

I was told not to expect immediate results; smooth flawless skin would be a slow and gradual evolution. I imagined I would be quite red post-treatment, but what I saw as I took my first glance in the mirror made me audibly gasp. I looked severely sunburned and as the anesthetic cream wore off, my raw skin started to sting.

Laboriously applying a thick layer of sunscreen, Richie immediately gave me my post-treatment guidelines. No sun, no Retin-A products, and no vitamin C. I wanted to add no going out in public for fear of being mistaken for someone with an acute chronic skin disease. As advised, for the following three days, I applied only nutrient rich serum. I chose La Mer The Concentrate, which as I recalled from the press release has healing and soothing properties. To my utter amazement I awoke on day three to beautifully smooth, luminous skin—and this was after one session only. It is recommended to undergo at least four sessions, once every three weeks, for really visible results.

This treatment is ideal if you have serious worries about aging, scarring or stretch marks, as there really is a noticeable improvement. However, I would not recommend it if you have minor skin concerns, as it takes genuine dedication to get back on the treatment bed.
