Return of the French Manicure?

French manicures are perhaps one of the most requested polish styles in nail salons across the Middle East. Who secretly doesn’t love the fresh pink lacquer and clean white tips? Be that as it may, in recent times the classic French manicure has fallen from grace with the trend setting fashion set, branding the look tacky and distasteful; much to the malaise of the Middle Eastern nail obsessed. This past year we witnessed the emergence of the ‘anti-French’ manicure on many a F/W runway; from the silver tips at Behnaz Sarafpour to the beige base and black tips at Thakoon. The new French color combinations were all about one thing–staying as far away as possible from pretty neutrals and porcelain tips.

However, with Peter Philips’ choice of discrete French polish on models’ hands for the Chanel S/S ’13 Ready-to-Wear show, all preconceptions have been blown out of the water. The Creative Director applied one coat of Le Vernis in Ballerina creating a delicate base whilst using Eastern Lights on the tips, a shade created specifically for this show. So does this signal the return of the classic French mani to the forefront of haute fashion? We hope so…
