A Couture Face Mask That Will Change the Way You Think About Makeup

esprit-dior-tokyo-peter-philips-maskPeter Philips is continually the master of invention—crafting smoky eyes out of lace and spinning lashes from gold thread. Now, in his new role as creative and image director of Christian Dior makeup, he’s doing the same with the fragments leftover from Raf Simons’ Haute Couture collection. On display at Esprit Dior Tokyo through January 4 is a series of eight photographs shot by Patrick Demarchelier that capture Philips’ “work in progress”—the work being a spectacular maquillage mask. While the pro crafted similar things for the house of Chanel (like the mesmerizing Miroir, Miroir video), never before has the world been privy to his creative process in quite the same way. From the tiny flower that lands like a “fly” on the model’s cheek to a full-on face of “armor,” the metamorphosis is as spectacular as the “celebration of hand” Simons sent down his high-fashion runway.
