What is Keratin?
Keratin is a protein which is naturally found within the hair. The treatment involves a mass dosage of this protein applied to hair lengths, which ultimately relaxes and straightens the hair.
The Brazilian Keratin Treatment temporarily straightens the hair by sealing in liquid keratin with heat. It is intended to eliminate frizz—another problem I’ve always dealt with—and it lasts for three months. It’s for people with hairstyle commitment issues (like me).
Some formulas contain formaldehyde—the agent responsible for the long-lasting smoothing effect—which is a carcinogen and is potentially harmful. This, of course, raised some concerns. After a little bit of research, however, I learned that only daily exposure to the chemical can cause major irritation but it is deemed acceptable if applied every 8 to 10 weeks.
Questions to Ask the Stylist:
Am I a good candidate for the keratin treatment?
Even if your hair is naturally straight, it will possibly add strength. If your hair is curly and you spend copious amounts of time with heated appliances, it will significantly reduce the length of your beauty routine. If your hair can withstand a 400-degree flat iron, you’re probably a good candidate, unless you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
What do I need to do to prepare my hair for the treatment?
The answer is usually nothing, other than making sure that you have enough things to keep yourself entertained, as the process usually takes around 90 minutes, depending on your hair type and length.
What do I need to do after leaving the salon?
You must avoid washing your hair for at least 24 hours. Keratin takes its time to set in, so the longer you can manage your hair unwashed, the better. Your hairdresser will advise you to use sulfate-free shampoo, as it is softer on your hair.
