You’re guaranteed one of two things after a weekend spent lounging poolside or reposing at the beach. Either you’ll walk away with a set of glistening, bronzed limbs, or, you’ll head home with a red, stinging sunburn in lieu of a killer tan. Those who experience the latter can follow a set of simple steps to soothe the discomfort and get rid of sunburn fast.

1. Be sure to shelter your burned skin from the sun. More exposure to the sun’s UV rays will further irritate damaged skin and delay the healing process. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to avoid the sun altogether. When outdoors, make sure your skin is covered by way of a wide-brimmed sun hat, long sleeves, or an umbrella.

2. Take a cool bath and slather a generous amount of pure aloe vera gel to the affected areas. Aloe vera includes soothing properties that relieve itchiness and discomfort almost instantly. To take the heat off your skin, pop a painkiller such as Advil or Ibuprofen.

3. Opt for loose, baggy clothing to minimize discomfort.

4. Because sunburn can raise your temperature and make you dehydrated, make sure to drink a lot of water.

5. Of course, the best cure is prevention. Apply a supercharged SPF at least 15 minutes before any exposure to the sun. Reapply the sunscreen every 2 hours to avoid sun damage and other UV-related skin issues, such as wrinkles and hyperpigmentation.
