As the designers for Fashion Forward Season 5 unveiled their collections on the runway, a beauty army worked overtime backstage to create a variety of looks. M.A.C Cosmetics took full charge of the war paint and showcased rich berry lips, gold-slicked eyebrows, and some crystal-embellished eyelashes. The hairstyle to note was the ponytail—from long and sleek to wrapped horse tails, the swishy staple made for the perfect beauty accessory. Here’s our edit of the beauty looks from the shows.
The Show: Ezra The Look: Side-parted ballet buns gave the models a ballerina-like elegance. The drama was left to the metallic gold-swept sets of eyebrows and pink crystal-encrusted false eyelashes that dazzled under the spotlight each time the models blinked.
The Show: The Emperor 1688 The Look: Poker-straight and sleek ponytails complete with quiffs were topped off with military-style hats that shielded black liquid-lined eyes. A lightly contoured cheek and strawberry lip glaze created a fresh and modern effect.
The Show: Starch Foundation The Look: Luminous skin with a dusting of bronze was given extra definition with a dabbing of highlighter down the center of the nose, at the Cupid’s bow, and the top edge of the cheekbones. The eyes were anchored by a bold brow and framed with a soft, minky-brown eyeshadow. With the hair left straight and parted in the center, the look was minimal and clean.
The Show: Hâshé The Look: With a no-makeup makeup look, all eyes were on the ponytails. The hair was swept back into a partially wrapped, dressage-style horse tail and from the mid-lengths to the ends, the hair was treated to some backcombing, which took the look from sleek to soft.
The Show: Yousef Al-Jasmi The Look: Metallic-washed eyelids in a startling yet beautiful shade of sea foam were accented with inkpot black, winged eyeliner. The pink lips (with just a touch of gloss) and the wavy, voluminous side-swept hair gave this look a dreamy appeal.
The Show: Aiisha Ramadan The Look: Nude makeup with just a flick of liquid liner meant that the disheveled chignons took center stage. The Hitchcock heroine-hairstyle with a bouffant lift from the front made a pretty contrast to the intricate twists visible from the back. One part chignon and one part ballet bun, this updo showed artistic flair.
The Show: Maral The Look: A modern-day take on The Great Gatsby, the soft taupe eyeshadow was given a luminous twist with the addition of a white kohl pencil along the inner water rim of the eye. The bold brows balanced the rich, berry lip while the absence of false eyelashes ensured that the look stayed modern. The bun was created using a fishtail braid that was then wrapped clockwise and pinned just behind the ear.
The Show: Jean Louis Sabaji The Look: A sooty, aubergine-accented smoky eye was given a seamless blend by working the shadow along the lower lashes. The rest of the face was dressed using a palette of nudes: warm, sandy beige on the cheeks for contouring and a peach-toned nude lipstick created a perfect harmony. Slicked-back ponytails and the attention-grabbing red and white fingertips added an edge
The Show: Dima Ayad The Look: Look-at-me eyes and lips made for a fierce combination and were paired with the sleek ponytail—the hairstyle trend emerging for the season. A bold liquid liner on the eyes and the deepest cherry pout added a velvety finish. The eyebrows were brushed up and strong while the cheeks were softly contoured, ensuring that this look stayed inside the “pretty” territory.
The Show: Hussein Bazaza The Look: The half-wet look is the most modern way to leave hair loose and your tresses won’t stick to your lipgloss at the slightest gust of wind. A smoldering set of anthracite gray eyelids gave the eyes an almost haunting beauty, while a pretty pastel pink lip ensured that the look was kept couture, not clownish.
The Show: Zareena The Look: Shimmering eyelids in burnished rose gold and peachy cheeks gave a luminous glow to this look. The models sported a series of auburn hairpieces that were intricately decorated with golden flowers and leaves, creating fairytale crowns.
The Show: Lama Jouni The Look: Frosty sets of eyebrows paved way for pretty, bronze smoky eyes (very Versace in style), complete with a hint of metallic kohl liner at the innermost corners of the eyes. The tawny cheeks and nude lips gave this look its mannequin-like perfection.
The Show: Daneh The Look: A stop-sign red, matte lip was paired with a wash of metallic eyeshadow and a hint of white kohl liner in the eyes’ waterline. The matte skin and elegant updo gave this look a refreshing feel while the absence of liquid eyeliner and lashes of mascara kept it crisp. In short, this is how you should wear red lipstick during the day.
The Show: Taller Marmo The Look: A variety of beauty looks took to the runway during this short show, including a painted black masque, half-done eyes with painted false lashes, and barrette clips that held the hair in place. The common thread was undone beauty mixed with over-the-top drama—two very different façades indeed. While the painted black faces (an ode to Venetian masks) have since amassed controversy, this particular look was fresh, modern, and polished.
The Show: Said Mahrouf The Look: A flash of vivid cobalt blue eyeliner gave a futuristic feel to this otherwise very natural makeup look. The winged edge and the accent on the socket line added a graphic edge to the eyeliner. Perhaps the look was a futuristic take on the sixties—the pale lips and long, flat-ironed hair were certainly an ode to that era.
The Show: Madiyah Al Sharqi The Look: A palette of earthy shades, like terracotta and bronze, were washed over the eyes, lips, and cheeks. In contrast to the candy-colored pastels present in the collection, these hues gave the look an air of sophistication. With the hair kept straight and tucked behind the ears, the overall look was one of fairytale beauty.
The Show: House of Nomad The Look: Athletic-looking girls with a gothic edge marched down the runway with berry-stained pouts and dark smoky eyes—this team looked beautiful but tough. The side-swept braid appeared to have been tied in a hurry to keep the hair off the face, and a few strands were left loose to provide an effortless appeal. Short, glossy black fingertips gave an added feeling of fierceness.
The Show: Mauzan The Look: An autumnal play on rose and red, the lip was velvety and rich like the color and texture of the rose petals. To keep the look feminine, the eyes were sculpted with a pink-toned bronze shadow. With no harsh black lines and the mascara kept to an absolute minimum, the tonal color palette was the talking point.
The Show: Amato The Look: As always, the spectacle that closes Fashion Forward did not disappoint on the beauty front. This season, the archetypal Amato girl was inspired by witchery. Make no mistake this beauty look was expertly applied to give that Tim Burton-come-Galliano feel—one of theater and darkness. Heavily charcoal-accented eyes, bold eyebrows, and an ombré blood-stained lip were all present. High Marie-Antoinette hair was dressed in a black veil for an added dose of drama.
