The Year in Lipstick, According to Rihanna
More exciting than Rihanna’s racy CFDA Awards ensemble or triumphant return to Instagram was the wide spectrum of colors she wore across her lips. With every wardrobe change, the A-list singer and style icon presented us with an equally impressive makeup move.
Wedding Belles
Kim Kardashian, Olivia Palermo, and Poppy Delevingne all tied the knot this year to their respective beaus. Kim and Poppy sported loose locks while Olivia wore her hair tied in a low ponytail, highlighting that effortless elegance is the way forward for modern weddings.
Baby Boom
Baby bumps were popping up everywhere with Mila Kunis, Blake Lively, Hayden Panettiere, and Shakira leading the list of fashionable expecting mothers. News from the royal camp has it that the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant with her second baby, due in April 2015. Photo: Courtesy of Eric Lively
Contour Crazy, Courtesy of Kim
Kim Kardashian posted on her Instagram that she plays optical beauty tricks courtesy of contouring, and women around the world started mimicking the look. A selection of dark and light powders and foundations artfully placed on the face created razor sharp cheekbones. Just make sure to blend, blend, and blend.
Victoria’s Secret Models Revealed Their Skinny Secrets
Before this year’s annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show , we saw the supermodels take to social media to divulge the secrets behind their toned bodies. The Pilates, kick-boxing, and grueling personal training sessions were all documented to give us some get-to-the-gym inspiration.
Gucci Girl Cosmetics
Under the direction of Frida Giannini (who, incidentally, is leaving Gucci in February 2015), the luxe fashion label Gucci branched out into beauty. With myriad Gucci fragrances already in the market, there is now a full line of pigment-rich cosmetics to covet. Who wouldn’t want to look like a Gucci girl?
Christian Louboutin Turned From Red Soles to Red Nail Polish
As the story goes, celebrity cobbler Christian Louboutin first created his trademark red soles by painting a pair of heels with red nail polish. It seems only fitting that he lent his name to a line of sell-out nail polishes.
Ombré Was Out and Bronde Was In
Tie-dye, bohemian tresses were replaced with bronde, a hair color that is neither brown nor blonde. Subtly lit strands were the beauty order of the day.
Bangs Came Back With a Vengeance
Channeling Jane Birkin-style bangs, faux or not, was all the rage. Lily Aldridge, Suki Waterhouse, Behati Prinsloo, and Beyoncé’s baby fringe were all noteworthy, face-framing cuts.
Blue and Pink Hair Rinses Were All the Rage
An unlikely trend, pastel hair colors were spotted on a number of celebrities. Nicole Ritchie went blue, model Charlotte Free and Sienna Miller championed pink tresses, and Kelly Osbourne sported a lilac crop. The youngest Kardashian, Kylie, even had blue stripes in her hair for her sister’s wedding.
Lip Liners Topped Our Beauty Wish List
Visible lip liner has been banned in beauty for as long as we can remember. With the return of matte lipsticks in deeper rose/nudes, lip liner came back into focus this year. The art of over-drawing the perimeter of your lips creates the illusion of plumper lips and is a makeup trick used by Beyoncé as well as the Kardashians.
Eyelash & Eyebrow Wonder Serum
We painted these potent potions daily like clockwork onto our eyelashes and eyebrows. We marveled at how stubby lashes were transformed into fluttery ones and sparse eyebrows filled out into power brows. The super serum showed that when beauty meets science, we’re all winners.
Cara Delevingne Took a Walk on the Dark Side
Fashion’s wonder girl Cara Delevingne dyed her signature golden locks to dark brown. As her acting career started to take off, Cara took a trip to the dark side, straight after BFF Suki Waterhouse, bringing us back to the question: do blondes really have more fun?
Cara and Kate for Burberry Beauty
British beauties Cara Delevingne and Kate Moss paired up for the My Burberry fragrance campaign. We wish we were behind the scenes on that shoot—what a power duo.
Flower Power
We went dizzy during the summer over flower crowns(21). From the Dolce & Gabbana runway to the Coachella festival, this was a year of flower-adorned tresses.
Flash Tattoos Were Our Accessory of Choice
This year, we took a trip down memory lane to the age of transfer tattoos. Gold and silver flash tattoos layered up the arm in place of stacks of jewelry and became our summer must-haves.
Bare Escentuals Crossed Into Liquid Territory With bareMinerals
Known for its complexion-perfecting powder formulas, Bare Escentuals moved into the liquid foundation territory with its bareSkin Pure Brightening Foundation—just ensure to shake well before you apply.

Overload on Kale, the New Super Food
We ditched the daily Starbucks cups for cold cold-pressed green juices, complete with a healthy helping of kale. Kale is from the cabbage family and has been praised for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
