Beauty Smackdown: The Good Oils

For a long time people have shied away from facial oils, especially those with oily skin; but as it turns out, not all oils are the pimple causing bad guys we think they are. There are some oils that will actually help normalize your skin and make it less prone to oily breakouts. From the most sensitive, to the most troublesome skin, facial oils can actually benefit all skin types providing you use them cautiously. These days, facial oils are packed with a range of anti-ageing, plumping, hydrating, and skin balancing properties, making you wonder why you didn’t give them a go sooner. However, not all oils are created equal, so we have put two products to the test to find out which will reign supreme.

The Product: Origins Plantscription Youth-Renewing Face Oil

A facial oil that absorbs on contact to help repair the skin’s barrier and replace vital youth-renewing lipids lost with age.

The Result:

The Origins Plantscription Youth-Renewing Face Oil is a clear formula that is much lighter than other oils I’ve tried. It’s almost a hybrid between an oil and a serum—rich, but thin and easy to spread. I found that 3-4 small drops of the oil are enough to alleviate any tightness or dryness, but at the same time, it is light enough to sit well underneath makeup. You can feel the different texture of the oil as soon as you warm it in your hands: it’s finer and seems to sink straight into the skin rather than sit on the surface. Fortified with 20 precious oils from around the world including raspberry seed oil, argan oil, tamanu oil, and evening primrose, it smells amazing and I can definitely say that it leaves my skin looking refreshed and youthful.

The Product: Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil

A sparkling, bright, lemon-scented serum which helps balance the complexion while providing clarifying and toning benefits.

The Result:

Thanks to the lemon ironbark in this blend, the Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil smells exactly like sugared lemon, which I absolutely love. The scent lingers for a few minutes after application before disappearing. The oil itself has an amazing brightening effect on my complexion and when applied at night I wake up to skin that’s smooth, even, and radiant. I definitely think those with oily or acne prone skin will love the Artemis formulation as it’s extremely light and with all its antiseptic properties, it will aid in the healing of spots.

THE VERDICT: Although it comes with a hefty price tag, the Sunday Riley Artemis Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil is definitely a winner. The formula is non-greasy, moisturizing, and super lightweight meaning it spreads smoothly and absorbs quickly to leave behind a luminous glow. Although the product works wonders under my foundation, it’s worth mentioning that it contains pink grapefruit oil which is considered to be a mild photosensitizer, meaning it can cause the skin to react to sunlight. So, it’s best used in the evenings, especially if you have sensitive skin. The formula also contains black cumin seed oil, which is a powerful therapeutic compound that fights premature aging by supporting the body’s natural production of immune cells. Oh, and did I mention how amazing it smells?
