Vogue International Editor, Suzy Menkes, who previously spent over 25 years critiquing fashion for the International New York Times (formerly the International Herald Tribune), hardly needs an introduction. During a visit to the Guy Bourdin: Image Maker photography exhibition at London’s Somerset House (where many London Fashion Week shows are held), this image in particular sparked her commentary: “The beauty industry is claiming that for the first time in recorded history, nail polish is outselling lipstick. With a nail bar even on village streets, who can doubt the power of polish? Certainly not Guy Bourdin who made this surreal image back in 1970.” —Suzy Menkes The obsession with the celebrity-driven nail art trend seems unrelenting for the time being, resulting in the sales of nail polish being at an all-time high. This debate has posed a few questions in my mind: are these results sustainable? Will nail polish take the place of our beloved lipsticks? And most importantly: what use is a great set of glossy red fingertips without a slick of an equally eye-catching lipstick? For now, we leave you with an ode to the timeless classic—the red lip.
