Our love affair with our eyelashes is never ending. From curling, to tinting, to extensions, to serums, is there anything we won’t do to get longer, stronger, thicker, and ultimately more alluring lashes? Twiggy-style spidery lashes made a comeback on the runways this Spring 2014 season, namely at Carolina Herrera, with makeup artist Diane Kendal citing the look as a “fresh, modern take on twiggy.” For this, a volumizing mascara is a good place to start. Sephora has jumped on the trend by launching the Upside Down mascara to give an alternative to the traditional mascara application method as we know it.
Replacing the standard single wand with two smaller brushes, this mascara works much like a tweezer, pinching the lashes on both top and bottom as you press the wands together. In theory, gripping the lashes from both sides ensures that every lash is fully coated, while twisting the lashes upwards and outwards initiates a curling function.
As I tested this product, I clamped my lashes and rotated the wands as directed. In practice, each lash was covered in the patent black gel but the wand didn’t do much to separate my eyelashes, so they came out a little on the spidery side—which is suitable if you want a mascara-heavy look true to twiggy form. I must admit, I really didn’t know where to begin to coat my lower lashes, and even with my practiced steady hand, the jet-black formula left tire-marks on my eyelids. Perhaps there’s an age limit for over-the-top, look-at-me lashes (frankly, I would be past it), but I’d imagine that the young beauty mavens would appreciate the novelty factor. Who says that makeup can’t be a fun pastime?
