I love the idea of a beautiful woman who does her hair,” said Guido Palau backstage at Oscar de la Renta. “We often talk about the downtown girl—this easy texture and the coolness—but when you see a woman wearing a beautiful dress and she’s very pulled together, there’s something effortless about it.” Though the mane master was talking about the uptown French twists he crafted for Peter Copping’s first collection for the house, he may as well have been discussing Rihanna at yesterday’s premiere of Home, the animated film to which the star lent her voice. Wearing a pink satin Dior gown, the pop icon played the part of a polished lady—one who definitely has her hair done and takes the time to perfectly apply her vampy lipstick (also a trend for Fall ’15). Though we love Rihanna with a ponytail or beachy waves casually squashed by a beanie, there’s something to be said for style and sophistication that require real effort to achieve. Palau told editors that it’s often a challenge to produce a look that conveys a sense of ease and makes highly designed clothes look modern, but, he said: “If you can keep doing it yourself, where does it lead us? When we look back at great, iconic women of the past, they weren’t always ‘do-it-yourself’ women.” And there’s no doubt that pros will reference the refined side of Rihanna behind the scenes for many years to come.
