The Must-Have Makeup Item for Fall ’15: Brick Lipstick

Break out that brick lipstick from the bottom of your makeup bag (and perhaps your Doc Martens from the back of your closet), because this shade is staging a serious comeback. The iconic boot—a former accessories staple of face painter Francelle Daly in the late ’80s and early ’90s—was the inspiration for the oxblood bullet (NARS Lipstick in VIP Red) slicked across models’ lips at 3.1 Phillip Lim. The pro described the look as a balance between “raw and refined.” The rawness entered into the picture via tinted moisturizer that mimicked “real skin” and allowed freckles, like those seen on Magdalena Jasek, to shine through. The semimatte pout added polish. And at Donna Karan, makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury combined two shine-free tubes from MAC (Spirit and Verve), before dabbing them onto catwalkers’ mouths and cheeks for a tawny flush. “A matte [finish] is a sophisticated and chicer way of wearing color,” said Tilbury. Come fall, a throwback to our favorite decade—care of a brown-red lip and flannel-esque frock—is definitely on the agenda.
