Orange Really Is the New Black

“You see the makeup before you even see the girl,” quipped face painter Yadim of the traffic-cone orange slicked along models’ lower lashes at Peter Som. And it’s true; the pro’s ode to Pop Art and “hyper-real” beauty was a showstopper, one he swears real women can pull off: “It really is just a brushstroke someone can do at home.” Sure, I’ve heard that one backstage before, the look in question often requiring a row of false lashes and the dexterity of Mary Lou Retton to pull off. But he made me a believer when he crafted the neon look on my sleep-deprived eyes in less than two minutes—gliding the pigment from the inner corner just past the pupil, gently erasing any pigment from my fringe with a cotton swab. While Yadim used something “floating around” in his kit to bring a certain amount of “intensity” to the runway, he suggests using Maybelline New York Color Sensational Lipstick in Vibrant Mandarin and topping it with translucent powder for an equally vibrant effect. When it comes to liner for Spring ’15, it appears that orange really is the new black.
