Backstage Rewind: The Beauty Trends We Loved From London

Scarf Strands

With NYC currently blanketed in snow, urban girls should take their cues from backstage and bundle up using their length. Seen at shows like Simone Rocha and Vivienne Westwood, hair was wrapped around or tied under necks (and in the case of Rocha, layered with chunky pearls).

Accesor-Eyes

Lower lashes continued to be an area of interest at Mary Katrantzou, where makeup artist Val Garland combined MAC Fluidline with faux fringe for a doll-like effect. More traditional uses of black liner also popped up at Burberry and Erdem.

En Pointe Accents

And if embellishments on the eyes weren’t enough, there were plenty of bows (Giles), bands (Margaret Howell), and ’80s combs (J.W. Anderson). “I don’t think the kind of girl we’re creating would have bobby pins in her bag. She’s out dancing all night, there’s heat, there’s sweat, and she reaches into her bag, grabs a comb, and scoops up her hair,” Turner told us backstage at J.W. Anderson. We like a woman who thinks beyond the basics.

Dark Arts

Inky hair was a big trend in New York, but the glamorous-yet-goth lip at Giles (a combo of MAC Pro Lipmix in Black and Burgundy) made us consider swapping out ’90s brick for bold black.

The Glitterati

Fans of flash won’t be disappointed come fall, as touches of glitter continued to trend in London. Gold particles were sprinkled onto eyes at Temperley, while a full face of sparkles was seen at Sophia Webster.

So Slick

Dual-textured strands were seen at shows such as Preen by Thorton Bregazzi, where hairstylist Syd Hayes tempered cloud-like curls with gel raked from center part to ears. At Peter Pilotto, Anthony Turner sleekfied the section swept across models’ foreheads, leaving the length relatively untouched. And even the hair above the eyes got in on the action at Christopher Kane, where face painter Lucia Pieroni brushed up brows with NARS Triple X Lip Gloss.

Buns Hon

Messy knots are still having a moment, and thanks to Luke Hersheson’s Instagram, we can re-create Jonathan Saunders’ runway version with ease.
