Leather Liner: The Luxe Eye Accessory at Fendi

When Peter Philips is the man behind the makeup chair, one can never expect the norm. From lace to jumbo glitter, the face painter manages to make maquillage magic with just about anything. And this morning at Fendi was no exception: Philips sliced slim strips out of the house’s leather hair ties and adhered them to models’ eyes with lash glue (a technique he employed at the house’s Spring 2013 show, but with neoprene). “Karl came to me and said, ‘Peter, I like this color, can you make it into an eyeliner?’ So that’s what I did!” he explained of the cornflower blue that bordered a contrasting band of black cream. To take the graphic concept one step further, Philips chopped the majority of the length off of false lashes. “It’s almost like a toy—like Playmobil,” he said of the faux fringe. “It’s child’s play—very simple, very basic.”

Sam McKnight’s love of gardening and flowers—a subject he Instagrams frequently—was represented (intentionally or not) in the hibiscus-like accessories wrapped around billowy ponytails. To keep strands “daytime” and “outdoorsy” (a feeling reflected in the bright lighting over the catwalk), he worked Kérastase Mousse Bouffante through strands, tonged sections loosely, and blasted all over with Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray before gathering the length into a low tail.

While I’m very much coveting the mini bags models wore down the runway, I’m happy to settle for leather liner and a windblown ponytail in the meantime (and so is my bank account).
