Ah, the selfie: a self-portrait with just a shot of narcissism thrown in for good measure. Cue the selfie sticks (for longer reach) and a myriad of filters to brighten, lighten, or tan your complexion at the touch of a button. The selfie is a photographic phenomenon associated with our smartphone generation and Kim Kardashian has catapulted the craze to the next level. Inspired by her husband, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian has published her “Selfish” book of selfies with Rizzoli, due to hit shelves this May. If the cover photo is anything to go by, then this is sure to be one intimate set of self-portraits.

Why do we love the selfie so much?

Well, for one, it can act as a mirror—take a quick snap and check if your makeup has stayed put or whether your eyeliner wings are even. It’s also a game of probability; in the old days, one Polaroid picture was all you got, but now, you can take 20 selfies and choose the best angle for your face and then fix it up to look like a cover girl.

How to take the perfect selfie, in the words of Huda Beauty:

If you’re a selfie novice or simply want to brush up on your photography skills, here’s a tutorial by beauty blogger Huda Kattan on how to nail the self-portrait every time.
