Backstage, I once witnessed mane master Orlando Pita bluntly characterize an editor’s middle-of-the-road haircut as neither here nor there. Was his observation a bit harsh? Yes. Was he right? Probably. I’ve always been a member of the beauty school of thought that believed you either go big or go home: Hack it all off (Jennifer Lawrence-style) or wear waist-grazing strands (like Rihanna). Ladies in the limelight such as Camilla Belle, Chloë Sevigny, and now Kendall Jenner (according to Justin Bieber’s Instagram), however, are making a case for “halfway hair,” with shoulder-length cuts that can easily be pulled into a pony. Those couple extra inches might be viewed as a safety net to some, but there’s definitely something to be said for the versatility of the lob. (Just don’t ask Pita to replicate the look when he’s holding scissors in his hands.)
