The Ponytail at Jason Wu Was Worthy of a Silver-Screen Siren

We want it to be retro but not too retro, that’s why we pulled it back into a ponytail,” said Odile Gilbert of the Lauren Bacall- and Charlotte Rampling-inspired hair at Jason Wu. In order to achieve Old Hollywood waves—not curls—she made a side part and divided strands into one-inch sections, spraying each with Kérastase Laque Couture hairspray before wrapping the top half around a curling iron. Gilbert locked in the shape without forming a tight ringlet by twisting the remaining half and then twirling it around the barrel. To lend locks a soft, “undone” effect reminiscent of the silver-screen siren and English actress, she lightly finger-combed and gently brushed out the waves before teasing hair at the crown for a bit of lift, finishing the look by tying the length back at the nape of the neck with a bungee band. While Gilbert has worked directly on Rampling’s strands during her illustrious career, she’s only admired Bacall’s from afar. “I was once with Naomi Campbell in the Hermès store in Paris and we were following her around, just wanting to listen to her [husky] voice—she’s an icon.” It appears that even backstage and runway legends need a muse.

Lauren Bacall once said, “Legends are all to do with the past and nothing to do with the present.” The look at Jason Wu’s Spring 2015 show proves the screen siren’s signature style still continues to inspire.
