Interview: Joelle Mardinian on Using SPF for her Hair and Working With her Kids

Nothing beats a little me time by the beach, but our hair often pays the price. We know that shielding our skin from the sun is important, but we tend to neglect our mane. The truth is that sunrays are just as harmful to our tresses as they are to our skin. Overexposure to the sun can contribute to dry, brittle hair, split ends, and even hair loss.

We sat down with TV presenter and makeup artist Joelle Mardinian following the launch of her Joelle Paris Sun Protect haircare line to discuss the importance of hair SPF, her campaign, the secret to healthy tresses, and working with her kids.

KHAOULA GHANEM: Why does our hair need sun protection?

JOELLE MARDINIAN: Your hair needs just as much protection from the sun as your skin, especially in this region. The heat makes hair really brittle and dry, which ultimately makes it break off.

Can women with fine hair use these products or will the SPF weigh the hair down?
Of course they can. I have the finest hair ever so prior to launching my SPF line—which includes shampoo, conditioner, an elixir, and a very light sun spray—I first tested these products on myself to make sure that they were perfect for every hair type.

What important factors did you consider before launching your line?
I’m very lucky that I have a beauty salon and a wide range of clients, as well as friends, that can test my products for me. I don’t tell them that it’s Joelle Paris, because I want to see their honest reaction. My first line took me four and a half years to launch; I wanted to make sure that I released something that I loved. People really trust what I say, and I can’t jeopardize that. This is a professional haircare line that is hypoallergenic and pure.

Do the products repair damage or just protect the hair?
No, this is all about protection. When you protect your hair, it will start to feel better anyway, because it’s no longer being exposed to what’s hurting it. This line is great for people who blow-dry their hair a lot, because it’s not only about the sun—it’s about protecting the hair from the sun as well as the heat. It’s also perfect for those ladies who wear a headscarf or a veil, as the heat doubles in the sun.

How do you manage to keep your hair healthy despite changing the color so frequently?

I have the best hairdressers; they’re amazing and they really look after my hair. Whenever I plan to color my hair, it’s discussed for a month so we do it in a healthy way. It’s not just about hair coloring; it’s also how you take care of it afterwards. I use a lot of hair treatments and I also get a trim every two months. If you don’t get rid of split ends, your hair will never grow. Also, I only use Joelle Paris products on my tresses.

How was working with your kids on the campaign?

The day I was shooting underwater with my kids Ella and Bailey, I burned my hand and was in agony. They had to buy ice cream to cool it down. However, it turned out amazing. It was really special to share my success with my children—they’re a big part of this line.

What did your kids think of the blue hair?

My daughter thinks I’m a mermaid. She was jealous when I went pink last year, because you know, girls love the color pink. The blue she was fine with. I asked her if she wanted to dye her hair blue and she said yes, then she changed her mind, which is good.
