Eyeliner Notes: The Shape of Things to Come

Cat-eyes were anything but classic for Spring ’15—from luxe leather bands at Fendi to “couture” flicks at Prada, liner was taken to an entirely new level this season. Here, makeup pro Vincent Oquendo (the face painter behind this editorial snap from the October issue of Italian Elle) shares his best tips for winging it:

Shift your shape: One flick does not flatter all, so make a graphic wing work for you. “Oftentimes backstage, the look is modified to fit each model,” Oquendo explained. “For example, if you have hooded eyes, cheat your wing up in the corner and thinly rim along your top lashes and upper waterline for a more lifted look.”

Think beyond basic black: “Chic black liners are nice, but a navy—or even white—can brighten eyes and catch everyone’s attention,” he said. Case in point: FendiMax MaraGivenchy, Dior, and the photo above. Oquendo’s top product picks:  Anastasia Beverly Hills Covet Waterproof Eyeliner and  Laura Mercier Crème Eye Liner.

Create a killer frame: Bold liner requires even bolder brows for balance. Lightly fill in arches and brush them up before picking up a pencil or liquid formula. “With a well-manicured brow, you could just about do anything with your eye makeup,” he added. For proof, look no further than  Cara Delevingne.
