The Gucci Girl Goes Low Maintenance

The Gucci bombshell—at least the gussied-up girl we’ve gotten to know the past few seasons with smoky eyes or rows of false lashes—embraced her softer side for Spring 2015. Natural was the adjective makeup maestro Pat McGrath used to describe the look (an interesting word choice, seeing as the Italian house is launching a 200-piece cosmetics line next month). “The whole collection is based on girls being individuals—she’s dressing herself and pleasing herself,” she explained. For subtle definition, McGrath used a damp brush and the chocolate brown shade from the brand’s forthcoming Magnetic Shadow Quad in Tuscan Storm as a liner on the upper lids, sweeping a camel color from the same palette through the crease. To “bring life to the eyes,” the Magnetic Color Shadow Mono in Iconic Gold (a shimmery metallic) was skimmed along the lower lashes—a detail that caught the light similar to the sparkles scattered strategically across a kimono-esque cocktail dress ( Look 41) or a patchwork jacket ( Look 19). Luminous Glow Foundation was applied in combination with moisturizer to allow catwalkers’ complexions to “show through.”

Hair pro Orlando Pita took a similar approach, creating product-less ponytails by scraping strands back with his hands in lieu of brushes for texture. “We’re not trying to make a thick, fake ponytail—we want realness,” he noted. “Extensions have been around for more than 10 years now, they’re almost becoming like the Farrah Fawcett hairstyle.” The pro credited designers’ desire for minimalism and simplicity to multiple seasons of “overdone” hair and makeup. “All of a sudden everybody wants a clean palette,” he said. “It will take a few years before we figure out what that next Farrah Fawcett hairstyle that sticks around too long is going to be!” For now, we’ll embrace the low-maintenance movement with pleasure.
