Google released its first ever beauty trends report on Thursday and the top searches from January to August 2015 were all about hair.
Braids
Braids, which reigned supreme on the spring 2016 catwalks, were the most searched hair trend among women this year. Box braids (popular among Beyoncé and Zoë Kravitz) and goddess braids (better known as milkmaid braids) were the number one and two most searched hairstyles, respectively.
According to Google, most people seek the plait style during the summer months. Not only do they keep loose strands off your face, the woven hairstyle also acts as a great antidote to humidity.
Unconventional Hair Colors
For those contemplating candy-colored locks, there is no better time to take the plunge. The second most searched hair trend was unconventional hair colors. With countless celebrities sporting to “dye” for tresses, “granny hair” was among the most popular, propelling searches related to gray or silver hair to skyrocket.
For inspiration, look to Kylie Jenner, Rola Saad, and Joelle Mardinian who have all debuted rainbow-colored hair this year.
The Man Bun
Indeed, if one paid enough attention to the runways and social media feeds, these trends are no surprise. However, the number one most searched beauty trend for 2015 wasn’t even for women. “Men’s hair” were the most googled beauty words this year, and for the first time overtook women’s hair queries by 6%.
Some of their searches included “how to grow a man bun” (don’t cut your hair) and “how to tie a man bun”.
One company taking advantage of the peak in interest for men’s’ hair is Groupon, which is selling a clip-on man bun for US $9.99; AED/SAR 37. The hairpiece is an attachable (and even more importantly, detachable) topknot for those wishing to mirror their favorite musicians (we’re looking at you Harry Styles) and Hollywood actors.
