Sparkle Is Fall’s New Beauty Staple

With Rodarte’s Fall 2015 collection debuting in an hour, I woke up thinking about a shining moment in designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy’s backstage beauty history. “I hope they actually make this,” said makeup artist James Kaliardos of the glittery lip look he created at their Fall 2014 show. Suddenly, every editor was captivated by sparkle even if they’d sworn off the concept in favor of a sophisticated nude or classic red pout years ago. Though many formulas have come close, we haven’t found a product that replicated the effect—until now. During a recent trip to London, I discovered Glitter Lips, a two-part system that comes with adhesive and finely milled sparkles. Though I expected my mouth to feel similar to sandpaper, the final result was relatively smooth. Plus, the particles stay put—even through eating and drinking—until you scrub it off with an oil-based makeup remover. Mirrorlike glitter was also splashed across false lashes via beads of silicone at Carolina Herrera “to make it look as if they’re water droplets,” noted face painter Diane Kendal of the glamorous aquatic theme. And with Naomi Campbell closing Zac Posen last night in a glitzy ball gown, we’d say the catwalk queen has spoken and sparkle is here to stay.
