Hair accessories ruled the runway in Paris and Milan for Spring ’15, and now New York designers are getting on board. From shiny metallic and simple black bands at Honor and Richard Chai Love to Rasta-meets-Matisse clips at Suno, embellishments are all the rage. Backstage at Derek Lam, mane master Orlando Pita secured “bell-shaped” ponytails (mimicking the silhouette of the wide-leg pants in the collection) with mushroom-colored leather ovals that coordinated with MAC’s Scene and Coquette eyeshadows applied by Tom Pecheux (a happy accident). “I always have chopsticks in my bag, so we take a chopstick, cut it in half, sharpen one end, and spray paint it,” said Pita. “If they make it to production, they’ll do it the proper way, but for the show we improvised. I made it and he liked it, so that’s what I did last night on Valentine’s Day.”
