Semi-permanent makeup may intimidate some, but recent advancements in technology just might change that. Those in search of shapely, natural looking arches that don’t require any filling in may want to try eyebrow microblading. This is a relatively new and painless eyebrow enhancing procedure that uses multiple needles to deposit pigment underneath the dermis, and give the appearance of thicker, bolder brows. Also known as semi-permanent hair-stroke eyebrows, the method works best for those who want to reshape, define, and cover bald spots—and it can render an eyebrow pencil irrelevant for up to ten months. We sent Style.com/Arabia’s resident fitness guru, Dannielle Blaker, to the La Clinique in Jumeirah Lake Towers to test-drive the technique.
THE TREATMENT
The procedure begins by using an eyebrow pencil to draw in the preferred eyebrow shape. This acts as a template to ensure that the end result matches the client’s desired shape.
Then, a carefully selected fine grade pigment—which is chosen based on the client’s overall appearance, skin tone, eye color, and hair color—is implanted into the skin using a fine needle.
In order to create definition and dimension, the specialist uses a microblade machine—which creates small, fine strokes—in combination with a larger needle.
The tattooed area will appear dark and bold in color for two weeks, while the healing process (which lasts six to eight weeks) takes place. Some swelling and redness may occur, but this usually lasts no more than 48 hours.
POST PROCEDURE
Avoid using any soaps or cleansers on the treated area for the first day, as they can be detrimental to the bonding process necessary for the pigment to stabilize in the dermis. Rinse the tattooed area with lukewarm water and pat dry with a disposable paper towel instead. Make sure your hands are thoroughly washed before coming into contact with the treated area.
You can then moisturize the area as it will start to dry out after a couple of days. Make sure to apply a small amount of a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer such as Lubriderm, Cetaphil, or coconut oil with a cotton swab to prevent any scabbing.
DO’S AND DON’T’S
DO apply sunscreen on the treated area to avoid fading and discoloration of the pigment.
DO wear large sunglasses and a hat for further protection. Rinse and dry the area thoroughly when in contact with chlorine.
DO inform your laser technician if you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your tattoo has healed.
DON’T pick or scratch the dry skin. Picking can cause scarring and premature loss of pigment. Let the skin shed naturally.
DON’T apply makeup to the tattooed area for the first two weeks. Chemicals of any kind may interfere with the healing and color of your tattoo.
DON’T use any glycolic acid or a face peel around the tattooed area as continued use could lighten the pigment.
